A four by four is any motor vehicle that has four wheels and has all four of them turning from the power of the engine. Most vehicles only have two wheels driven by the engine (4 x 2) and must stay on firm, flat surfaces or roads. Four by fours are able to go off-road much more easily, since the four powered wheels help them avoid getting stuck.
The most famous four by four race is the Baja 500, held in Mexico.
