Sailboats

Sailboats come in all sizes, from very small to very large. The biggest ones are designed to sail the oceans. The sails are of different sizes, with the largest sails on the main mast of the boat. Very large sailboats have more than one mast. They require a crew of six to ten people to sail them. The smallest sailboats can be sailed by just one person.
 
Many sailboats have small motors, to get them easily into or out of a harbor. Otherwise, they use their sails to move through the water.
 
Sailboat races are called regattas. Groups of boats of the same size race against each other. The most famous ocean sailing race is the America’s Cup, held every four years. The most famous freshwater sailing race is the Chicago to Mackinac race, held each summer on Lake Michigan.
